Life with Jasmine and Juliet, Our Rescued Dachshunds

Random notes on our experience with our two rescued miniature dachshunds

Social Dog

on July 7, 2008

We had a nice, lazy holiday weekend, including three days of socialization of our dear Pup-Pup.

There’s a Starbucks around a mile away from our home, and this weekend, we took Jasmine there all three days.  We went our regular pace down, had coffees and gave Jasmine some time to acclimate and relax.  We discovered that if left on the ground Jasmine would not sit and relax but if we put Jasmine in my lap, she observed the happenings around her but was comfortable enough to lay down.  Score!  I was hoping to find a way to take her out in public without causing her undue stress.  I think we found it.

By day two, Jasmine was happy to sit with me as I sipped my iced coffee.  She watched everyone enter and leave the store, and the numerous dogs around didn’t seem to bother her unless they approached her too quickly.  For once, we could sit and enjoy the day without her constant pacing, her constant entangling of her leash in our legs, around the chair legs and table stands.  It was nice.

By day three, Jasmine was crawling not only into MY lap but my husband’s as well!  That was not only progress in her socialization, it was yet another bit of trust that she bestowed on my husband.  She happily accepted scratches and pets and sat contentedly as we filled up on caffiene.  Thanks Starbucks!  $15 is a small price to pay (well, not so small) for some coffee and socialization.
